Match Report - Ladies County Squad v Mickleover Men - Sunday 7th April 2019

Having thawed out after the match against Cheshire at Cavendish, the day at Mickleover was a complete contrast and everyone was ready to take on the guys.

Thanks to Sam Gilbert for all the organising on behalf of Mickleover Men. And it was great to see Maggie Wylde and Margaret Brooks, who appeared in timely fashion on the first tee.  Margaret having completed a dash back to the club after supporting the charity runners in Derby.

Janet T, Jeanette Brown and myself did manage to tempt not only the players but also a few men following behind the match pairings, into the half way house.  I had rather hoped that the sausage rolls, pork pies, snacks and biscuits would slow the men down, but to no avail.

We managed to get the usual 3 additional shots and to be fair, we thought that would be enough to hold back the lads as they set off up and over the top of the first fairway.  Plenty of excellent shots to be had and Janet and I were feeling quite positive.

Despite this, those Mickleover men always put up a good fight and this year was no different.

Last year we lost 5 - 0 and we were hoping to overturn that result.  At the half way house our spirits were high and the ladies were holding their opposition in each of the matches.  Sadly, this time we lost 4 - 1 and the Mickleover men had the opportunity to take the chocolate.  To be fair there was plenty for all in the end.

We are grateful to the teams/clubs who offer the opportunity for us to use these matches to help hone our matchplay and pairing skills and as a result we have great strength in the squad. Despite these being termed as friendly matches we still aim to win.

Thank you to everyone for playing on the day and for everyone who helped and supported us. Special thanks go to Judy Gascoigne who dropped into the team at short notice.  It was good to see the past captain out and hitting a ball in anger! Our thanks also go to Mickleover Golf Club who offer courtesy of the course to the county ladies.

Our next friendly match is against the men at Matlock Golf Club on Sunday 28th April.  Fingers crossed we do a little better.

Our next official match is against Warwickshire Ladies on Sunday 19th May at Sutton Coldfield.  We intend to test our new County Week format on that day and we welcome anyone who wishes to join us.  More details to follow in the coming days.
