                                           Derbyshire V Cheshire Ladies

                                                   Cavendish Golf Club

                                                          May 7th 2023

This year Derbyshire hosted our inaugural friendly match against Cheshire at Cavendish Golf Club on the 7th May 2023. The forecast for the day was dry and turned into a beautiful sunny day which was very welcome indeed. We arrived bright and early and were greeted by very friendly and welcoming hospitality staff. After enjoying our lovely breakfast rolls we headed out to the first tee to be greeted by Lady Captain Pam Brindley.

The format for the day was changed from previous years as both the Cheshire Captain and I agreed it would be good to practice County Match week format, playing 2 foursomes and 3 singles matches off scratch. We knew that Derbyshire would have some very tough games as Cheshire always bring a very strong squad. The team appeared up for the challenge and set off in good spirits.

As the County juniors girls were playing behind us I waited a while to watch them tee of and caught up with our first foursomes match on the 7th hole. Walking a few holes with these two matches It became clear that Cheshire had indeed brought out a very strong team as the first to matches were battling hard to stay in their respective matches.

The singles matches were fairing somewhat better as it was very tight at half way.

Unfortunately we lost all matches to a very strong Cheshire team. Although the matches didn’t go our way the players can be proud of themselves for the grit and determination and great team spirit and reflect on how close some of the singles matches had come to winning. Thank you to Mel Davey our travelling reserve for the day who stepped in to caddy for Sarah Lundy.  Congratulations to the Derbyshire Junior girls’ team on the day- I will let you read their report.

On behalf of Derbyshire County Golf I Just want to say a huge thank you Cavendish Golf Club for allowing us the use of the course and to the hospitality team, the food was excellent and we were very well looked after, nothing was too much trouble and finally to Mr Captain Bob Clarke who was there at the end to watch the matches come in and who spoke briefly at our small presentation.

We look forward to our next friendly match on the 21st May at Burton GC against Warwickshire.

Deb Eaglefield – DCG Ladies County Captain
