Match Report – Girls Handicap Team vs Shropshire – 7th August 2023
Our second match this year was away against Shropshire at Shifnal Golf Club. This is a course none of us have played before so was very new and a challenge to all of us to say the least! It was a lovely course in brilliant condition, and we all had a great day, especially Dot, who was a great supporter!
To start the day off with a bang, Jemima was first on the tee and smashed a drive straight down the middle, putting the pressure on her opponent straight away! She played consistent golf and was ahead after the 3rd. Her opponent, Lily, was sinking long putts and was drew level by the 9th, but Jemima kept up her usual high standard of golf and managed to win her match 2&1 eventually.
I was next to tee off in another tight match against Lucy with neither of us ever more than 1up. I was 1 down after 8 but managed to fight back to pull all square after the 15th. However, after a nightmare in the trees on the 16th and a tough bunker shot on par 3 17th with her being on the green in one, I lost the match 2&1.
Gabby was next on the tee and involved in another tight match which was still all square after 16 holes. Gabby kept her concentration and focus, winning the 17th after getting up and down from a bunker, and then stayed calm on the 18th to hole a 10 foot putt for the win! A nail-biting finish for Gabby!
Next on the tee was Erin who played against Charlotte. She managed to get 1 up by the 9th and played consistently great golf after that, never giving up and striking the ball very well. She won by 5&4 on the 14th. Some great golf played by Erin!
Claudia was in the final match against Neveah. She played consistent golf throughout and was smiling as always! She was never behind and pulled away after the turn, a long putt on 13 putting her 4 up. She won the next to secure a well-deserved 5&4 win for Derbyshire!
Neve was last on the tee as our reserve match and making her Derbyshire debut. She played some great golf to say it was her first county fixture. She easily won her match 9&8. A real confidence boost for Neve, and she will hopefully carry her form in to the next match.
The final result was 4-1 to Derbyshire.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable day playing a new course, with some incredible golf being played by the girls once again! To add to our excitement from the day, we had found out later on we have won our Midlands group and will now be playing Lincolnshire on Finals Day at Branston for a chance to become Midland County Champions! Come on girls, we’ve got this!
