Sam storms to victory in the Midland Youths Golf Championships
17 year old Sam Potter, of Breadsall Priory Golf Golf Club, beat a high quality field of 140 participants, all aged up to 21, to win the Midland Youths Championships at Stoke Rochford yesterday. The field included a number of +2 and +3 handicappers, England players and US college boys.
He started the 3 day, 72 hole event well with a fine 67 to lie 5th after round 1. Sam followed that up with a 68 to lie second at the halfway stage, though 4 adrift of runaway leader Tom Cleaton of Rugby Golf Club. A steady third round of 71 saw Sam in 5th place and he maintained that for the front nine holes of the final round, going out in 36 strokes to be 3 under par overall and 4 adrift of the lead.
Birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes put Sam to within one of the lead and the excitement built as a further birdie on 14 put Sam to 7 under par and tied with the lead. A strong finish was still needed and a dropped shot on the difficult 15th was followed by a par on the long 16th. A stunning birdie, birdie (2,3) finish saw him over the line, winning the prestigious title by one stroke, and completing the back 9 holes in 30 strokes for a final round of 66.
