Derbyshire Ladies Squad v Mickleover Men Match – Sunday 18 April 2021
It felt good to finally play our first pre-season match for 2021. This annual event is always looked forward to with friendly rivalry having grown over the years amongst the players.
A cold but sunny day welcomed us at Mickleover, and Sam Gilbert and I were well prepared to work out handicap adjustments for mixed fourball better ball matchplay off different tees as per the new WHS system! An excel spreadsheet created by Sam did the job brilliantly!
County President Cynthia, Vice Captain Mel and I saw everyone off the first tee and then walked some of the course trying to keep warm – it’s chilly when you’re not swinging a club. Lady Captain at Mickleover, Nicky Taylor and her team kindly ran the halfway house with hot drinks and cake – what a treat. Bearing in mind we are all just returning to golf and some of our new squad members had never played Mickleover, we witnessed some amazing golf. The matches were so very close reaching the 17th or going down the 18th and we gave the men a run for their money. The men were the winners again but the matches were closer than before and could have gone either way.
Our next match is on Sunday 25 April at Matlock against the men – we’re all really looking forward to it and the coaching beforehand. At last, our County golfing season is underway.
