Match: Derbyshire Squad v Seniors Squad
Venue: Ormonde Fields Golf Club
Date: Sunday 26th May 2019.
Despite a bank holiday weekend, we still managed to draw an excellent crowd of ladies to Ormonde Fields for what is our annual match.
Some faces we hadn’t seen for a while and some we see very regularly but this is a game which is always played in such a friendly atmosphere. Past County Captains, Club Captains, players a plenty and all looking splendid in their county kit. What a lovely sight.
As Janet T and I managed to get a game this time, we had no official starter as everyone was playing for one side or the other. It was nice to give my golf clubs a breath of fresh air for a change. They usually sit in the car – on a ‘just in case’ basis.
There were some extremely close matches and certainly everyone had great fun.
The presentation of the trophy went to the Squad team who won all matches, but some were almost too close to call, so the Seniors certainly gave us a run for our money. The Claret Jug, presented by Shelagh Lancaster in her year as County Captain, remains with the County Squad at least for the next year. Well done to everyone who played on the day.
For the past few years, we have used this event to announce the Vice Captain elect for the following year and that day was no different.
Janet Thomas did an excellent job describing our new Vice Captain without mentioning her name, but no one guessed until announced. Thanks to Mel Prime of Horsley Lodge Golf Club for taking on the role and to everyone who has offered support on her journey ahead.
Mel is an excellent choice for Vice Captain and will be an even better Captain in 2021. Congratulations to her and best wishes to the dream team of Janet T and Mel for 2020.
Thanks go to Pat Holloway, Seniors Captain for organising the match and to Jeanette Brown who manages to get everyone together but couldn’t play herself that day. Thanks also go to Ormonde Fields for allowing us courtesy of the course. Another wonderful event for the County Ladies.
Janet Carlin
County Captain.
