Match Report - Ladies County Squad v Matlock Men - Sunday 28th April 2019
The Derbyshire ladies received a very warm welcome to Matlock Golf Club. Captain Paul Mooney and his team had been preparing for this challenge for a little while now. The Derbyshire ladies however were determined to give them a good quality rematch having lost in 2018. Following the obligatory photographs on the first tee, the matches commenced with some excellent tee shots.
“It was nice to see so many supporters on the day and my thanks go to Vice President Cynthia, Past President Margaret Mason, Past Captains Jan Young, Shelagh Lancaster and Judy Gascoigne as well as our wonderful Vice Captain, Janet Thomas. Despite the chill in the air we managed to arrange the dry weather.
As we wandered the course watching the matches, there were some excellent shots to be seen, some great match play taking place and the banter was just the best.
It was quite clear that despite this being a friendly warm up for the coming 2019 season, the matches were being taken very seriously with a side order of laughter. The Derbyshire squad were not about to give up without a fight.
Despite the determination of the squad we unfortunately lost the match 3.5 – 1.5 to Matlock men although two of the lost matches were taken to the last couple of holes.
Thank you to Captain Paul and to Matlock Golf Club for hosting us. Thank you also to Robert Kirkham and his team for the excellent catering and especially the post-match cake and for Judy for organising for us. We couldn’t prepare for our county match season without these games and although played in friendly manner are an excellent way to test our pairings and match play abilities.
Our next friendly match is against the Derbyshire senior ladies at Ormonde Fields Golf Club on Sunday 12th May when we play for the Claret Jug.
Our next official match is against Warwickshire Ladies on Sunday 19th May at Sutton Coldfield. As reported previously, we intend to test our new County Week format on that day.
For your dairies - County Week is being held at The Shropshire between Sunday 23rd June (practice day) and Wednesday 26th June. All supporters are welcome.
IMAGINE the shot – BELIEVE in the shot – ACHIEVE the shot
