DCG – SENIOR LADIES – MATCH REPORT

Match:            Derbyshire v Yorkshire

Venue:            Matlock Golf Club, Chesterfield Road, Matlock.

Date:               Thursday 28 July 2022

Well the day had arrived.  The Team were on their way and myself and Shelagh were outside having a fight with the Derbyshire Banner – off to a good start, it was up and looking good.

A bit worrying as the Yorkshire Team arrived early and there was no sign of a Derbyshire Player – so we sat down to sort the cards and work out those all important shots – many thanks for your assistance with that Shelagh.  Phew, Jenny Knight arrived, we had two Derbyshire Players, then one by one they all arrived.  Pat Wrightson, Yorkshire’s Captain and myself announced the pairings and with bacon cobs consumed the tee was buzzing.  Captain Gascoigne was on Admin and starter duties for the day and by 12.40 they were all on the course.

We had a special guest for the day, Margaret Mason, she hadn’t been out on the course for 12 years so was delighted to be driven around to see the many improvements to the course and to watch the team perform.  From me and the Team Margaret, thank you for joining us.

As you can imagine every game was a battle against a strong Yorkshire Team.  Leading the Team out was Jane Whyatt and Sue Drake, wow - they walked in with a 2&1 win against the strong Yorkshire pairing of Fiona Wood 4.9 and Melody Svenson 5.3 – an excellent start to the Match Sheet, well done you two.  Sue agreed to play Wednesday night after a last minute team change, thanks for stepping in Sue, much appreciated.

The 2nd Match out was Carol Simpson and Gill Lockwood, well every time we caught up with them they were down but fighting, no surprise when you read that they were playing against Julia Parry 4.4 and Chantelle Shaw 6.2 - well done you two to come in with a Half.

Our President Cynthia Machent and Jan Bilbie lost 5&4 to Jane Oliver 7.4 and Sue Smith 5.6  but threw everything at them, they came up against a very strong pairing – I know Jane has been around Matlock quite a few times (sorry C&J - unfortunately it’s me that has taken her around on most of those rounds) – a tough match for sure.  Jan Bilbie was handed her energy pack of assorted Jelly Babies on the tee, without those the score could have been much worse !

Sharon Plant, Lady Captain at Matlock, and Jenny Knight gained an admirable Half, against Julie Smith 5.3 and Gillian Johnson 10.7, well done you two, good to see you back at Matlock Jenn.  Following them in Match 5 was the duo of Alyson Connell and Sandra Maxwell - up against the Yorkshire Captain of Pat Wrightson playing off 3 and Tina Felton off 7.1 – what a match win 4&2 – again excellent drive and determination by the Derbyshire pairing.

Our 6th Match saw Kay Kearton and Shelagh Lancaster battling it out against Sandra Paul off 5.8 and Helen Duckett off 12.3 a match that went to the 18th , K&S were 2up after the 16th, lost the 17th and halved the 18th  – that was so close to give Kay and Shelagh a 1up win.

Our last and 7th Match, Mel Prime our County Captain and Lesley Watson lost 3&2 - that was against Hazel Fisher 11.2 and Sam Harben 9.2 of Hallamshire,  both strong players and playing well, it was their day – well battled Mel & Lesley.

My thanks to Pat Wrightson and her team – a competitive and enjoyable day throughout.  A magnificent Team effort by Derbyshire – well done.  So the overall result was a win for Derbyshire 4&3.

Our thanks to Matlock’s Greenkeeper Derek McJannet and his team – a great course layout in excellent condition, Catering - Stewart Shuttleworth and his helpers - excellent hospitality, Matlock Professional Christian Goodman, Tom Mooney & the office staff for their assistance before and during the match, and of course my personal thanks to you the Derbyshire Team for playing and supporting this match – thank you.

Next Match is at Erewash against Leicestershire & Rutland on Wednesday 10 August 2022 – 11am start.
