Derbyshire Girls vs Shropshire Girls

Midlands North Region

COUNTY JUNIOR GIRLS HANDICAP LEAGUE

BURTON GOLF CLUB 18TH July 2021

It was a great day yesterday at Burton-On-Trent Golf Club for our second inter-county handicap match. With the weather being up to 30 degrees throughout the day both teams were absolutely exhausted by the time all the matches had finished. However, though we gave it our all, we didn’t manage to pull out the win.

Up on the tee first was Jemima Abbott, playing a single figured handicapper, for her second Derbyshire match. Jemima battled her way through her round (only 1 over her handicap after 9) trying to get it back at any chance she could but her competition was too tough and Jemima sadly lost 6&4. Jemima showed great determination and played some brilliant golf. Though this may be aggravating at the time for Jemima, we have all been there before!

Next on the tee was myself Gabby Auld, joined with Dot the Dragon, giving me good luck again. After a few halves at the start of my round, I was 3 up after 10. Although I did start to worry after my playing partner had two good holes on 10 & 11 (holing a birdy put off of the green on the twelve) which made me only one up, I managed to dig deep and win the 15th and 16th, meaning I was 3 up with two to play so I had earned my point for my team.

Next on the tee was Claudia Weeks, making her second appearance for the Derbyshire girls handicap team. Claudia did a great job, taking the lead for the majority of her game, overall winning her match 1 up, after dropping from 2 up to 1 up after 17. Well done Claudia, great perseverance!

Then on the tee, playing at her home club, was Summer Smith, making her Derbyshire debut. Unlucky Summer for getting narrowly beat, plus it is extremely hard giving 7 shots away. Summer did manage to get an eagle on the 8th hole which is an amazing achievement!

Lastly on the tee, also making her Derbyshire debut, was Daisy Parker. Daisy’s match was backwards and forwards but after 17 holes, Daisy missed out 3 down with 1 to play, also giving away shots. Daisy’s cheery attitude is always great to see, and she should be very proud of her first match!

Unlucky girls for the 3-2 lost to Shropshire, we’ll get them next time and come back stronger for our next match! Even though we didn’t win its great experience for us all and well just learn from our mistakes.

A big thank you to Jemima and Claudia also for stepping in Olivia Barker-Sabido’s and Alicia White’s place, who couldn’t play because they sadly had to isolate. Hopefully we will all see you at the next match and we are all praying nobody else has to isolate too next time. I think all of us can’t wait until this virus finally dies down and we can get back to normal golf again, without any isolations!

Another big thankyou to Eleanor Kelly who organized our team pre match and to Paul who supported us girls by watching our tee shots, as Alice was not able to arrive for our tee times.  However Alice did make it up by driving around in a buggy, along with Eleanor, with lots of bottles of water and fruit, giving us all great motivation. The watermelon was very much needed in the heat! Hopefully nobody got too badly sunburnt and remembered to put on sun cream. Thank you to Alice and Eleanor for their great support as team managers as always!

Thank you to Burton GC as well for the fantastic course conditions (the greens were rapid!) and for the catering. The pizza and chips were definitely a greater hit compared to the healthy bits put in the sandwiches at our last match!
