County Captain's AmAm Report

Matlock GC - 3rd September 2017

Well, what a night---before the AmAm.
Been collecting prizes like a little squirrel all year and then spent the night before thinking--why on earth did I buy that? Finally dropped off to sleep around 3am. Not that I was at all worried how it would go!

Well, what a day. The sun shone, the birds sang and everyone turned up--well the latter two are true. Sadly mizzily rain set in around 1pm-ish and continued throughout the rest of play though thankfully with less vigour than it started.

18 teams entered and everyone set off in fine spirit. Norman, my better half, took on the role of starter but a dire emergency at the half way house halted him in the midst of his duties--Jean couldn't get in. Wot no cakes!!!!!! Norm set off to the rescue and fortunately solved the problem before returning to the 1st tee.
Cakes were back on--phew!

The Derbyshire flag flapped in the breeze and Janet Carlin, photographer for the day, recorded all the teams and every drive from the 1st tee. There wasn't one bad drive but the flag flew out in full for only one photograph and that was certainly a good omen for Libby Harrison who had a hole in one on the 8th. That hole in one made her day and mine too. Congratulations Libby.

A rumour gained credence when back 9 scores were somewhat less than the front 9. I would just like to scotch that rumour -- my cakes were not to blame!
There were some very creditable scores-- and yes, they ate cake too--with the Ashbourne team -County Rep Beth Griffin bringing in the winning score of 84.
They were closely followed by Matlock with County Rep Libby Harrison on 83.
Mickleover (County Senior Rep-Jane Whyatt) were 3rd with 81, followed by Chesterfield (County Rep Deb Eaglefield) and Breadsall Priory (County Rep Lorna Riley) on 79 each.

Nearest the pins were won by Sharon Plant of Matlock, Libby Harrison, Chevin (you can't better a hole in one) and Jane Turner, Tapton Park.

My thanks must go to all my helpers, Judy Gascoigne, Vice Captain and my right hand woman, what would I do without you, Maggie Wylde our amazing President and staunch Derbyshire supporter, Janet Carlin, Vice Captain Elect and prize photographer, Jean Arthington who "manned" the half way house throughout, Jan Young, Past Captain who helped Maggie on the desk and donated prizes for the raffle, Norman starter extroadinaire plus his half way house cake rescue and Matlock Golf Club who very generously gave me courtesy of the course for this fund raising competition.

A total of ¬£741.65 was raised (including ¬£201.15 raffle takings), thanks to all the Derbyshire Clubs and County Reps who supported the day. I hope you all enjoyed the day, despite the weather. Your contributions will go towards the 2018 training programme for the Derbyshire 1st & 2nd Teams.

With your help we will endeavour to improve on this year's 1st Team's very creditable 3rd place in North Midlands Region County Match Week, our best placing for 5 years - a County 1st Team to be proud of.

Hopefully we can also retain the North Midland Region's 2nd Team Trophy won in an incredible final this year against Nottinghamshire. Derbyshire last won this Trophy in 2003! - a County 2nd Team to be proud of.

Thank you to everyone who played.
