DCG – SQUAD v SENIOR LADIES – MATCH REPORT

Match:            Squad v Seniors

Venue:            Burton upon Trent Golf Club.

Date:               Sunday 11 June 2023

Results Sheet / Team Photo attached / etc

This is a joint report prepared by Deb & Judy.

Well the day had arrived.  The Teams were on their way and we were outside having a fight with the Derbyshire Banner – off to a good start, it was up and looking good.

We’d both decided to open the 9th hut so food and drinks were handed over to Fran and her team – they did a brilliant job of keeping us all fed and watered which was much needed, gosh it was hot.  From both us and the team members thank you so much to you Burton Ladies, a wonderful job.

The teams eventually filtered in and with almost everyone there we announced the pairings and gave the cards out – the usual competitive banter took place but at the end of it Eaglefield and Gascoigne were still talking, so that was excellent !!  We tried to give as many players a game as possible which was our overall target and we did manage to fulfil that aim, albeit that we ended up playing one singles match at the start which was Lorraine Proudler and Alyson Connell – what a fight that was, Lorraine won 2up for Squad, but Alyson gave her a run for her money as they say.  Not the intended format for you but thank you for agreeing to do it, we appreciated it.

We started the teams off one by one and headed out onto the course to watch the matches.   As you can imagine, very competitive.  It was good to see Hatti Evans on -2 playing with last year’s County Captain Mel Prime against the experienced Rosemary Whitehouse and Sue Powell, Seniors VC, Squad won that match 1up – so close, well done both sides.  Squad also won the next match 1up – so close again - that was Sarah Lundy & Mel Davey for Squad v Jane Whyatt and Teresa Burgoyne.   Eaglefield was now smiling, Gascoigne knew her team would be back fighting.

Debbie Mathews & Lorraine Wheatley for Seniors had a tough match against Kelly Thring and Summer Smith but every time we caught up with them they were enjoying it and laughing, we’d never seen Lorraine skip before but she was when they’d won a hole – L&D lost 6&4 but we’d say they’d all enjoyed it.  Gascoigne was relieved as the next two matches were won by the Seniors Sandra Walters & Janet Dolman v Beth Charlton and Eva Myers (3&2) & Carol Gladwin & Raili Turk (seniors)  v Janet Thomas and Janet Carlin (6&4) – well done, good news for Captain Gascoigne.

More good news for the squad continued when Sandra Maxwell and Claire Wallhead beat Pauline Bramley & Carol Simpson 4&2, tough cookies those two so well done squad.

With Eaglefield and Gascoigne having ducked from a stray ball hit by the Mens VC following our match, he said he was playing well apart from that one hole, we decided to walk to the 9th hut – refreshments were on our mind, as well of course watching the teams filter through, the food and drink was most welcome !

Eleanor Kelly and Fiona Roberts (County VC) were up next against Seniors Gill Lockwood and Alison Watson – can you believe it Squad won again  3&1– I think the heat had got to the Seniors !!  The last match Tracey Kirkham and Immediate Past President Cynthia Machent playing for Squad and Anne Colwell and Sharon Plant halved their match, the only halved match of the day – well done.

So the match was finished and tea and cake was being served in the clubhouse.  Thank you to the catering staff – the tea and cake was 100% delicious and thank you to Burton Golf Club for hosting this match – much appreciated.

The Captains thanked everyone for playing, not only was the course challenging but the weather was also.  Everyone wished Deb and her Team all the best for County Week which was to commence on 15 June at Holme Hall GC, near Scunthorpe.

It was Captain Gascoigne’s job to announce the result which was a win for the Squad 6.5 to 2.5 – well done Squad, you played well – and well done you Seniors that was a hard battle.  As Deb said, squad needed to win it back as the Trophy hadn’t been in their hands for a couple of years.  Squad had won it convincingly, the Captains shook hands and the Trophy was handed over.  Both teams look forward to the annual match next year.

Thank you all for playing.
